Halcyon High School Offers Free Mattresses to S1 and S5 Students in Major Parental Support Initiative

Halcyon High School has unveiled a significant welfare initiative aimed at easing the financial burden on parents while strengthening student comfort and academic performance. The school management has officially confirmed that all Senior One (S1) and Senior Five (S5) students reporting this academic year will receive free mattresses as part of a broader commitment to holistic education.
The decision, according to Headteacher Paul Mark Onyait, was informed by the realities many families face during transition classes. Joining S1 and S5 often comes with heavy financial demands, including tuition, uniforms, scholastic materials, and boarding requirements.
“We understand that starting Senior One and Senior Five comes with many requirements,” Onyait explained. “As a school that values partnership with parents, we have decided to provide free mattresses to all S1 and S5 students to reduce the pressure on families.”
He stressed that the initiative is not a publicity gesture but a deliberate investment in student welfare. Adequate rest, he noted, is directly linked to discipline, focus, and improved academic outcomes.
“When students sleep comfortably, they wake up refreshed and ready to concentrate in class. This directly contributes to better performance,” he added.
Parents and community members have welcomed the announcement, describing it as thoughtful leadership at a time when the cost of living continues to rise. Many say that removing one essential boarding requirement from the admission list will significantly ease back-to-school stress.
The Executive Director and founder of Halcyon Foundation Schools, Hellen Adoa, reaffirmed that the mattress initiative reflects the school’s deeper mission of national service through education.
Speaking during a meeting with parents and staff, Adoa emphasized that leadership is about impact, not position. She noted that her commitment to empowering young people remains firm.
“I will continue serving my nation in different ways,” she said. “This is the time to focus on development, education, and building a strong future for our children.”
Adoa encouraged parents across the country to consider Halcyon High School as a center of excellence that balances academic achievement with character development.
In addition to the mattress program, she assured all sponsored students within the Halcyon Foundation Schools that their bursaries remain secure. She pledged continued and expanded scholarship opportunities, reinforcing the institution’s long-standing commitment to supporting vulnerable and talented learners.
“Our sponsored students should remain calm,” Adoa stated. “Their sponsor is real, committed, and focused. We are not stopping. More students will benefit from bursaries.”
Education stakeholders have praised the move, noting that such initiatives strengthen trust between schools and communities while complementing national education efforts.
As the new academic term approaches, Halcyon High School is positioning itself not only as an institution of academic ambition but also as one driven by compassion and responsibility. Through free mattresses for S1 and S5 students and sustained bursary assurances, the school is sending a clear message: student welfare comes first, and excellence follows.
With management reaffirming its dedication to service and national growth, Halcyon High School continues to shape the next generation of leaders—comfortably, confidently, and with purpose.
